How will MTD affect you?
MTD is the governments mission that sets out to transform its taxation system to become one of the most digitally advanced tax systems in the world. Its mission is to ensure tax admin is easier for the taxpayer to submit returns and reduce errors.

MTD is the governments mission that sets out to transform its taxation system to become one of the most digitally advanced tax systems in the world. Its mission is to ensure tax admin is easier for the taxpayer to submit returns and reduce errors.
- MTD for VAT started in 2019. Certain VAT-registered businesses were required to keep their digital records and use approved MTD-compatible software to submit their VAT returns. From 1st April 2022 all VAT-registered businesses were required to follow these rules.
- The second stage of MTD is designed to replace the current Self Assessment tax returns. MTD for Income Tax will come into effect from April 2026 for self-employed business owners and landlords with income over £50K and 2027 for those with an income in excess of £30K

What you will be required to do?
If you’re self-employed and meet the criteria for MTD for Income Tax, you’ll have to take the following steps from 6th April 2026:
- Keep all business income and expense records in a digital format.
- send quarterly updates of your business income and expenses direct to HMRC via approved software.

If you’re self-employed and meet the criteria for MTD for Income Tax, you’ll have to take the following steps from 6th April 2026:
- Keep all business income and expense records in a digital format.
- send quarterly updates of your business income and expenses direct to HMRC via approved software.
- Finalise your business income by submitting an annual declaration.
The deadlines for sending quarterly updates will be the same for everyone who falls under the MTD criteria. These deadlines are:
- 7th May
- 7th August
- 7th November
- 7th February
